Timbuktu

Experience Ethiopian hospitality, tasty dishes and coffee with a bit of culture on the side

Long Street is no stranger to unusual eateries but recently one place caught my attention. Timbuktu is a hidden treasure that offers a South African a truly different African dining experience.

The aptly named restaurant offers Ethiopian food at its best. Get stuck into a flavorsome meal bursting with different textures and tastes while sipping on an exotically spiced tea. The food is truly delicious and at reasonable prices too. I enjoyed the traditional Ethiopian flat bread with their amazingly spiced mince.

Apart from the divine food and friendly and welcoming staff, I fell in love with the eclectic mix and match of décor that comprises this magical space. Bright colours, different patterns and odd statues drawing their influence from Africa, are crammed into every nook and cranny. It truly does give an out-of-SA feel and there is always the relaxed bunch of travelers sprawled on the comfortable couches taking in the atmosphere. They offer an intriguing 'Happy coffee' hour where they perform a traditional Ethiopian ceremony.

I highly recommend this awesome eatery for an unusual and delectable experience.
