Cape Town City Bytes : City Bytes / Market

The Eastern Food Bazaar

There is a place in Cape Town where a person can choose from an array of the most delicious Indian food, get top class service and still walk out with change in your pockets. I don't think I know of any other place in South Africa where this phenomenon occurs. And I am very grateful that it happens to be around the corner from my studio.

The old Wellingtons Fruit Growers where Darling hits Adderly Street has shed its petals and moved to greener pastures, leaving behind it richly cultivated soil. What has sprouted from here is nothing short of a miracle. Almost every day now I find myself, along with many others, debating over whether to have a Masala tea or a Bombay Crush, a delectable curry or a familiar falafel. The choices seem to be endless. The food is generous, healthy and delicate with several colourful sauces lining the counters for you to pour over your meal as you please.

The walls are lined with large teak carvings of elegant Indian designs and everything is neat, clean and in its place. There is an air of professional tentativeness in this hall that reaches out from Adderly Street through to the road on the other side of the building. Entire families find wholesome yet cheap meals in a familiar environment where they can chitchat and schlurp over their mango lassies.

The buzz starts around noon and again at twilight. Businessmen in suits and ladies in clickety-heels pour in for lunch, 'cos lets face it, why would they pack their own when this is yummier and probably cheaper too. For dinner its families and their extended relatives that crowd around the tables. I try to get there just before; it makes it easier to find a chair. The food market opens from 11am and closes at 9pm giving us all day non-stop amazingness.

went to EFB 2 c what the fuss was all about. Gr8 concept, service. Had the chicken fried rice, naan, rogan gosht and tandoori chicken. Njoyed the latter tho' the meat was a bit tough and the chicken fried rice was bland
