The Furgard Opening

The Furagrd Theatre, named in honour of South Africa's greatest playwright Athol Furgard, will open on February 12, 2010. The grand opening's gala evening will be hosted by Cabinet Minister Trevor Manuel. The theatre, situated in historic District Six, will be home to The Isango Portobello Productions. Isango Portobello was set up by Portobello Productions and produces theatre and film projects focused on South African talent for international audiences. The company has also won The South African Arts and Culture Award for Excellence in Opera. The 270 seat theatre building also includes a rehearsal studio, foyer space, dressing room and more. The opening season of the theatre includes performances of the award-winning London West End hit shows The Magic Flute ( Impempe Yomlingo) and The Mysteries (Yimimangaliso). There will be also be world premier of a new play wriitn by Athol Furgard for the opening, The Train Driver.
