Louis Minnaar - Originale at Studio 91

 view the exhibition

The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down...

Thesewere the chosen words for the opening of Originale the latestinstallation of the artist, illustrator and animator: Louis Minnaar.

Originale is a motley assembly of audio-visual work placed in a larger cluster installation. This cluster of work in its essence questions the validity of authorship and originality. By extension, it also questions how far we allow meaning to be imprinted onto us as well as how much we imprint meaning onto others through communication.

The light hearted "demise" of the artist is what is outlined in a visual conversation between a series of works that allows the author to become absent in the meaning of the work.

The show includes drawings, printed media, sculptures, videos and sound installations.

Welcome to the paranormal world of spider houses, bird men and carnivalesque caricatures. Louis Minnaar and his undefined, always-changing style of making random things don't really fit in anywhere among anyone and everyone making anything pretty. It creates a sense of uneasy awareness to the point of grotesque introspection and shoots an arrow straight to the heart. Emotional use of line style and incompatible transformations capture the viewer and spin him in a surreal wonderland web eyes stare back at you, images distort, objects appear and then disappear again prepare to be captivated.

Don't miss this exhibition showing at Studio 91 on Kloof until 15 July.
